Another year has flown by and with the effects of the pandemic gradually stabilizing we can finally take a deep breath and go ¨Feewh, We made It!¨, but that got us thinking, seeing as we were stuck indoors so long people had little to no choice but to order from online platforms and well-recognized eCommerce stores.
Did you know that over the course of the last couple of years over 9.2 Million Australian households preferred to shop online instead of going to an actual store! Pretty insane right?
eCommerce in 2021 started strongly, a trend that continued across the calendar year with an average of 5.4 million households buying online each month – an increase of 39 per cent from 2019, which continued to increase yearly!
While the year-on-year growth rate experienced distinct peaks and troughs correlating with restrictions, the associated fluctuations in household participation were less pronounced – indicative of the enduring shift in behaviour with shoppers increasingly preferring online channels for their shopping needs.
When we look closer at who is buying online, four distinct groups emerge: Occasional Shoppers, Active Shoppers, Very Active Shoppers and Super Shoppers
Australia outperforms other countries when it comes to the number of consumers shopping online at least once a month, but lags behind with high-frequency shoppers.
Come to think of it…Have you ever thought about which countries used online e-commerce the most on a yearly average? If not then don’t worry, We have got all you might want to know right here!
So let’s take a closer look at eCommerce and cross-border purchases from around the globe!
According to a survey of 25 countries that track consumers who have bought physical goods online at least once in the past three months, and made at least one cross-border purchase in the past year, Australia sits just above the global average, but behind many of our international peers.
In Australia, 84% of respondents shop online at least once a month – four points above the rest. Yet when it comes to the countries with the most high-frequency shoppers, Australia still has some ground to cover. In South Korea, China, India and Indonesia, more than 45% of consumers shop online at least once a week – almost double Australia’s rate of 25%.
A lot has changed over the due course, but as we can see…We have become accustomed to a digital life where everything and anything is accessible at the push of a button.
